Rheumatoid ArthritisPsychological Interventions for ArthritisA Stanford University researcher studied arthritis patients who were taught self-management skills by a trained lay person who also had arthritis. Four hundred patients with both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis participated in the controlled study. The participants were given six two-hour sessions on how to increase their sense of control and capability despite the arthritis. The study showed that improved self-efficacy could indeed be learned.
